My to-do list for the week has decreased. It’s now taking antibiotics and steroids, plus rest, read a book and watch DVDs while keeping warm. Doctor’s orders. It’s either rest at home or be admitted to hospital.

I spent three hours at the hospital this morning as my skin isn’t getting any better. It’s not yet infected, but could get there. It is red and throbbing, and like the protective layer is rubbed off.

I am proud to say I achieved two milestones at the hospital:

I did a wee in a cup on cue, and I didn’t cry when I had a needle in my hand (my lovely friend B was also visiting the hospital so she held my hand while the needle went in). Win!

It’s interesting when I go to the hospital – I have a great team of dermatologists, but they are forever changing as it’s a teaching hospital. So when I see new registrars, they are learning about my condition as well as treating it. Often they rattle off symptoms like a textbook – and often these symptoms are new, and alarming, to me.

Here’s what I learned today:

  • Loss of iron and electrolytes through the skin.
  • Chest infections.
  • Dehydration, resulting in possible renal failure.
  • Possible death….???

Whew! Quite scary.

Usually my biggest problem is trying not to get my best dress covered in Vaseline.

Kidding. No, ok, sometimes it really is a problem!

Reassuringly, I have passed the possibility of death, about 28 years ago. I think?

On a serious note, it’s a huge reminder about the importance of skin, and the big job it does to keep us alive.

So over these few days I’m going to refrain from using my brain and take some time to properly rest. That includes not writing or blogging.

I’ll be back soon, in a few days. And don’t worry, I’m not going die.

Get well soon lovely! You'll be up and back being busy and fabulous in no time – you're still fabulous when resting, though πŸ˜‰ You're right, our skin is such an important barrier. I still need to do the guest post! Things have been ridiculously busy, sorry. So rest, relax, watch lots of tv & eat lots of chicken soup!

I hope you get well very soon, and I'm very glad you were brave!
I must say that I like the fact that public hospitals are teaching hospitals, but I get really sick of the yearly doctor changeover too.
I was just remarking the same thing to my new Registrar when I was there last week.

I was whining to myself about how unfair it was that I am getting wrinkles and still have pimples.

    Now I feel humbled.

Hope you are feeling better this evening.
