Creamoata: a much loved, yet lost food of my childhood. Help me find it.

April 3, 2011 Carly Findlay 21 Comments

So I am using the power of blogging to aid me in finding a much loved, yet lost food of my childhood. Creamoata.

 (source)

Note, that’s not how I remember Creamoata – the stuff I had was by Quaker.

When I was little Mum used to make Creamoata by Quaker for breakfast. I think it’s oats ground up finely so when milk or water is added, it turns very creamy. It’s kind of like semolina, only more oaty.

Creamoata is so big in New Zealand that there is a Creamoata man!

 (source)

I found this recipe which I may try, but I really want the real thing.

I have not seen it in supermarkets recently – perhaps for the past five years. I am in Melbourne Australia. Does anyone know of this, and if it’s still on the market? Where can I buy it? I’ve seen some creamy style oats by Quaker but I think it’s basically like that Uncle Toby’s temptations stuff.

Can a New Zealand reader mail me some please?

And what’s your much loved, yet lost food of your childhood?

Never heard of it sorry. But, if you research the company that makes it, im sure there will be contact info on the net somewhere for it.

I did a quick search for you, dont know if it helps

Uncle Toby's Deleted Products. Looks like they've stopped making it

Quaker Oats site doesnt seem to list it either, but there's gotta me a Contact Us form on there somewhere.. yet to find it though.

anyway, I gave it a crack, see if that helps. hope it does! 🙂

You are an Australian now. Get over it. In the past my New Zealand friends have told me about this Creamoata, when I was putting rolled oats in the food processor to get instant oats.

Instant oats is now the thing. They have been par boiled. From what NZ friends told me, Creamoata was just very finely ground oats.

Sorry to give you the news but apparently the NZ factory ceased production in 2008, with Nestle giving out that recipe (the one you've found) to many customers who missed Creamoata, too.

A fav of mine that was lost for a little whie but has become available again is good old junkett 🙂

Frozen Moove drinks in plastic not cardboard. The milko used to hand some out to me and my friends when we were little. You bit out a corner of it and sucked out the frozen chocolate milk. YUM. Those were the good 'ol days…

I use rolled oats to make porridge, also sometimes quick oats which are the same thing but chopped into smaller flakes. It's possible you could get your creamoata effect by using OATMEAL, which I think is very finely ground oats. Available in many supermarkets and healthfood stores too. Worth a try? I remember very creamy porridge from my childhood too. My mumused to make our porridge with milk instead of water and add sugar. I make mine now with water and milk, simmer with the water until it's thickened and creamy, then add the milk and cook a bit longer. I never use skim milk.

Oh my gosh, so weird that I stumbled upon your blog. When I was pregnant with both my kids I was craving quakers creamoata, I used to have it as a child also. I sent my poor mum on a wild goose chase to every store in town looking for it and alas it was no where to be found. I guess they discontinued it. Perhaps you should start a campaign to get it back. Ill support you for sure! I can taste it already!!!

Just the other day I too thought of Quaker Creamoata. Hadn't thought of it in years. I'm from Melbourne too. Can't find it. All the good things I used to love are either gone or different (like Allens snakes alive which are nothing like they used to be).

Only 18 months late, I'm sorry BUTTTT… I, too, am a mega cremoata lover AND the next best thing that is available these days are 'Milk Oaties' by Uncle Toby's. They're not quite the same as I remember (but maybe that's because it's 20 years later and I'm having to make my own breakfast, hah!), but they are very creamy and yummy! Hope this helps 🙂

    Very easy to replicate.

You must use Harraway Scotch Rolled Oats. Buy a packet and put it through the blender untill fine.

Then make a bowl of real Creamota as you will not tell the difference. Do not use rolled oats as they end up to grainy and do not develop that smooth creamy texture of Creamota.

The original company purchased the oats from Harraway's and ground them up. Simple really but a very nice product. I would challenge anyone to tell me that it does not taste like the real thing.

    Creamota easy to make.
just as the real process used Scotch rolled oats. Get a packet of Harraway Scotch rolled oats blend it to refine it and there you have it genuine Creamota.
Do not use Rolled oats as it is too grainy and will not reproduce the smooth texture which Scotch rolled oats achieve.
I was bought up on Creamota and have used it for years now into my sixties and once again I have Creamota every day.

Hi Landor and others who had Creamota, I was born in the 50s in Tas and also brought up on this porridge for breakfast, made up with milk, put in a bowl with milk over top and nutmeg and sugar, it was so yummy. I continued buying this in my married years with the last packet I purchased at Purity (now Woolworths) in Claremont about 1994/95?? I asked at Coles and Woolies and both said it was removed as there were not enough sales to warrant manufacturing, unbelievable when you read blogs like this and yet there are other "rubbish" cereals that remain on shelves. Oh well another icon gone into history. Thank you for the info LANDOR, I will try this as it sounds perfect, I am now 60 and still not too old to try things.

My Uncle was french and used to mix 50/50 creamoata and semolina with water, pinch of salt and when cookes sprinkle sugar and cold milk… AMAAZZING . Uncle tobys, Quaker and Flemings (NZ) all stopped making creamoata many years ago.
Substitute is to put small quantities of porridge oats through your old style blender till smooth – and make your own.

Bring back creamoata, Im certain that whatever manufacturers were to produce it they would have plenty of customers. Like others I have searched the shelves of food stores, unfortunately, creamoata is nowhere to be found. No wonder there are heaps of gut problems out there, due no doubt to the products like creamoata, being discontinued.

Use oatmeal from any health store ( about $2.50 for 500 g) and mix half cup with one cup water and one cup milk with pinch of salt. Stand overnight and stir continually while cooking to keep smooth.Serves ,2

I grew up and was raised in Gore, Southland,NZ, where the Flemings Cremoata mill was. It closed in 2001. Uncle Toby’s brought Flemings out and moved their operations where I now live since 1998. Not sure whether or not their product is still been made or sold as I’m not a rolled oats or porridge fan yuk
