I need some New York know-how!

October 31, 2011 Carly Findlay 9 Comments

So tonight I started my research and planning for my New York trip! The internet is such a big place, and so is New York, and my attention span is very short. So I am not sure where to start.

So I am asking you, my lovely readers, to give me some tips. Where to stay, what to do, where to eat, where to shop? Is there a great place to see bands? What tours should I take?

I’m going in July/August 2012.

Ultimately I wish I could live like Felicity and make out with Ben Covington.

I imagine I will arrive in New York, all wide-eyed and frizzy haired, in awe of the possibilities. Is there a Felicity Tour?

Please help! All suggestions welcome.

Oooooo, I love Felicity AND New York. Loved visiting NYU and Dean and Delucca. My tip for tours is to use Big Onion Walking Tours. I loved that a local could give me insider info about all sorts of places and things about town. I also enjoyed the free Staten Island ferry for nice city views and the Statue of Liberty. The Museums are brilliant and I believe the Museum Mile is on during June or July where you can get free entry all day. I have a list of bargain shopping ideas if you'd like them and suggest being there for 4th July sales. They are amazing!

The Pod Hotel is a bargain (at least when it comes to the crazy prices of NY accommodation), and it's in a great location. The views from the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) are just as good as from the Empire State Building, and it's a lot cheaper. The Muji store at the bottom of the New York Times building is AMAZING. Have fun!

    Hey Carly,

When I went to NYC 5 years ago I stayed at Chelsea Lodge as well. It's not too bad a place for it's price and location. I'd also suggest this as well if you're willing to go for some REALLY cheap accomodation, I'd suggest using this: http://www.airbnb.com/new-york-city

It's a site where residents rent out rooms to people for a few weeks. I stayed with someone for a week and they didn't seem to be too crazy or nutty. I'd also suggest the Big Onion tours as well and head to the SoHo markets if you can too.

That's so exciting! I can't wait to hear all about it… you know, once you've planned it and actually gone.

There is a sex and the city tour, and a greenwich village food tour. Just ask your hotel person.

I've never been to New York and I'm certainly never going, so I'm no help at all, but I'm sure you'll get lots of tips. Do you know any media people who might have NY connections? People in radio over there that you could email?

    Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge
Seek out Strawberry Fields in Central Park
Play on the 'Big' keyboard on the floor in FAO Schwartz
MOMA, The Met and the Gugg all good – that could be days right there, so depending on time
The new 9/11 Memorial would be on my list now!
The Stand is a massive bookshop, near Ground Zero, if you are into books (and have luggage space – altho they do send to Aus!)
Walk, wander, take in all the little streets, shops, Squares, galleries…
